Past exhibition: Eastbury's Treasured Memories

About Eastbury's Treasured Memories

Situated in the Eastbury Ward of Barking, East London, this community oral history project celebrates the voices and experiences of local residents who have long, and more recent connections to the area.

The project aims to document and share participant's oral histories about living, working, and growing-upin the borough from the early 20th century to the present day.

Part of the project also included a collaboration with Eastbury Primary School to explore games from the past, and to share insights with the young people about how the area changed.

This exhibition is the culmination of a series of workshops and interviews which took place from October 2018 until July 2019. The audio stories you can listen to in the exhibiton were collected as part of those sessions, and will be preserved at the Archive and Local Studies Centre at Valence House. All the material on display has been kindly copied and loaned by participants.

Eastbury's Treasured Memories is funded by The National Lottery Heritage fund.

"We initially ran Treasured Memories as a reminiscence group, and quickly realised the amount of wonderful stories and rich histories there were in Barking and Dagenham that needed to be recorded. A love of the areas and the was Eastbury Manor House has changed since we were children inspired us to seek funding for this project. And it grew from there! Participants built friendships, and found talking about the past was cathartic. Some people turned up to the first session and said they had nothing to share about their life, so it's been a pleasure to watch them own their memories, both the good, and not so good parts." - Chris Laney and Pauline Steed, Treasured Memories
